There are different assumptions about pressure and stress in the organizational world. Many companies believe that putting pressure on workers leads them to produce more, better and faster. However, such cultures have hidden costs. Some of these costs are, for example, higher absenteeism due to work stress, more accidents ande medical leaves. The lower the hierarchy of the worker, the higher the costs.

Work environments that generate tension and fear, in the long term, produce a decrease in work commitment. Work engagement is associated with feeling valued, secure, respected and supported. Companies with a lack of work commitment have 37% more absenteeism, 49% more accidents and 60% more mistakes. Organizations with low levels of employee engagement also have 18% lower productivity and 16% lower profits (Queens School of Business and Gallup Organization data).

Positive Culture

Increasing evidence in positive organizational psychology shows that a positive work environment generates significant benefits for both employers and employees.

A positive and healthy culture should have the following six qualities:

  • Interest in others.
  • Mutual support, kindness, and compassion.
  • Avoiding blame and forgiving mistakes.
  • Inspire each other at work.
  • Emphasize that work is meaningful to each other.
  • Treat each other with respect, trust, appreciation, and integrity.

What can leaders do to foster a positive work culture?

  1. Promote social connections. Studies show that positive social connections at work produce favorable outcomes. For example, people get sick less, recover faster from surgeries, get depressed less, learn faster, tolerate discomfort better and perform better.

2. Show empathy.  Leaders have a great impact on employees’ feelings.  Leaders who demonstrate empathy and compassion toward employees promote individual and group resilience in challenging times.

3. Encourage them to talk – especially about their problems. Feeling trust and confidence in the leader improves employee performance. When employees feel trust rather than fear, it encourages learning and the spirit of experimentation that is fundamental to innovation.


Positive organizational cultures are more successful in the long run because they increase employees’ positive emotions and well-being. This, in turn, improves interpersonal relationships and amplifies skills as well as creativity. Positive work environments attract employees and build employee loyalty by making them play to their strengths. Organizations that develop positive cultures achieve higher levels of effectiveness in different areas such as financial, customer satisfaction, productivity and employee engagement.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) breastfeeding benefits children´s as well as mother´s health.  Women who breastfeed have lower rates of breast cancer rates before menopause and potentially lower risks of ovarian cancer, osteoporosis and coronary heart disease. Because of this, the WHO recommends exclusive breastfeeding for at least the first 6 months.  Nevertheless, many women stop breastfeeding and one of the most common causes is returning to work.

Working should not necessarily have to lead to reduce breastfeeding rates. Rather, it is the difficulty of continuing to breastfeed under the conditions experienced when they return to work that women most often mention as the reasons to interrupt lactation. Women’s possibility to breastfeed is significantly reduced when they return to work if breastfeeding breaks are not available, if infant care near her workplace is inaccessible or unaffordable, and if no facilities are available for expressing or storing milk. Legislation guaranteeing breastfeeding breaks could improve working mothers’ ability to continue to breastfeed. However, it might not be enough if organizations do not incorporate a culture of breastfeeding with policies and procedures that support it.

Why and how should organizations support lactation?

When women work in an environment where their right to breastfeed is supported, they are more motivated and engaged. Absenteeism, permissions for medical appointments and medical leaves decrease, as breastfeeding benefits mother´s and child´s health. Work abandonment of recent mothers, with the related costs of staff turnover fall.

Companies may support lactation by:

  • Creating procedure manuals – guidelines – for managers and employees about how to adhere to the policy and comply with the procedures.
  • Contracting specialized professional support to train Human Resources and managers about adequate duration of maternity and paternity leaves as well as how to support mothers who return to work.
  • Incorporating breastfeeding, pumping and storing facilities and promoting proper use.
  • Suggesting / designing communications to promote a breastfeeding culture.
  • Preparing managers and directors to become mentors who may share their personal experience of conciliating breastfeeding and work to those employees who are o will be in the same situation. These mentors may also become valid intermediaries between the employees and the company so that workers may ask for information and present their needs related to breastfeeding.
  • Offering employees telephonic and face to face breastfeeding counselling provided by specialized professionals during and after maternity leave.
  • Onsite and online workshops for employees about how to manage lactation and return to work and resources such as books and specific reading materials.

In Latin America women join the workforce at a faster pace than anywhere else in the world, adding up to 80 million more women since the 1960s. For this reason, organizations need to pay particular attention to specific issues related to women, such as breastfeeding. This of course will benefit the whole company, not only women.

Employees who work at night perform extremely important roles in hospitals, transportation, production, emergency services among others. However, the natural cycle of sleep may be altered by having to be awake at night. The human body follows a cycle regulated by an internal process– circadian rhythms – which is related to light and darkness. This biological process regulates cycles of body temperature, hormones, heart rate and other functions. For human beings, the desire to sleep is stronger at night. For this reason, it is not easy to reset our circadian clock when working at night. However, organizations can do a lot to accompany employees who work when most sleep.

How to provide support from the company?

Lack of sleep is associated with increased irritability, impatience, anxiety, depression, memory difficulties and higher rates of mistakes that may cause accidents. In turn, people who sleep poorly experience more stomach related problems, menstrual irregularities, flu, and weight gain. There is also more chance of heart problems along with high blood pressure.

These negative effects may alter family and work relationships, as well as cause unnecessary suffering. Organizations may act preventively by providing specialized information on how to achieve restful sleep even when working at night. The more employees know about the topic, the better decisions they will make in their daily routines before, during and after business hours. In this way, they will be more likely to have healthy habits that help them rest better and have more energy to accomplish their tasks.

Professionals who specialize in sleep are best suited to transmit knowledge such as:

– What are circadian rhythms and their functions are

– Benefits of restful sleep for the mind, body and bonds

– Sleep hygiene recommendations for employees working at night

–  Food habits and recommended physical exercise for shift workers

– How to use naps to relieve drowsiness

– Recognize when a doctor’s appointment is appropriate

It is highly recommended that night shift supervisors participate in these workshops to take recommendations into account for their own habits, as well as to promote them in their teams. Just as helmets, harnesses and gloves protect workers, providing specialized information on healthy habits and restful sleep is another way of taking care of health and integrity of employees working at night.
